Monica's favorite gear for
making Mocha Latte Mix
If you prefer to buy a ready-made mix, this one combines chocolate and coffee flavors deliciously. (My recipe is a copycat of this mix.)
This cocoa powder adds dark, rich chocolatey flavor to the mocha mix.
If you don't want to make your own vanilla powder, this is a good option. (It's pricey, though.)
Also available: recipe to make your own
This adds dark, rich coffee flavor to the latte mix.
This adds the best creaminess, but you can opt for a nonfat or nondairy option (see below).
The perfect size for storing and gifting this latte mix.

Simply add water to this instant mix for a delicious Starbucks copycat hot or cold mocha latte. Convenient for home, work, travel, dorm rooms and camping. Great for gifts, too.

Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup instant espresso powder
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder (dark, Dutch processed recommended)
  • 1 3/4 cups instant dry milk*
  • 1/3 cup powdered (confectioner's) sugar
  • 1/2 cup vanilla powder**
  • 1 teaspoon corn starch
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt

Directions
*For a non-dairy, vegan version, substitute dry coconut or soy milk powder.

**If you don't have vanilla powder, you may substitute 1/3 cup granulated sugar. Or, make your own vanilla powder, recipe at: https://www.theyummylife.com/Vanilla_Powder

Add all ingredients to food processor or blender, pulse until well combined into uniform mixture. (Alternatively, you can whisk ingredients together in a large bowl.)

Makes 2 1/2 cups dry mix. Transfer to jar or other air tight container.

TO MAKE 1 SERVING:

--HOT LATTE-- Add 1/4 cup of mixture to mug and add 8 oz. (1 cup) boiling water. Stir and enjoy!
--COLD LATTE-- Add 1/4 cup mixture to mug and add 1 tablespoon hot tap water; stir until smooth. Gradually stir in 8 oz (1 cup) cold water; add ice cubes, if desired.

OPTIONAL: top with whipped cream; sprinkle with cinnamon or cocoa powder

Coffee and chocolate are a winning combo that take center stage in Starbucks cafe mocha lattes. Now you can make this yummy beverage anytime, anywhere with the convenience of a homemade instant dry mix--just add hot water! The mix I make tastes very similar to the dry mocha mix sold at Starbucks; but mine is way less expensive. I love having a jar of this on hand to enjoy myself or to give as a gift. (Look for printable labels further down in this post.)

I previously posted two similar recipes for Vanilla Latte Instant Dry Mix and Pumpkin Spice Latte Instant Dry Mix. This mocha version is similar to my vanilla latte recipe with the addition of cocoa. It can be made vegan by substituting dry coconut or soy dry milk for the dairy dry milk.

MOCHA LATTE MIX INGREDIENTS

You can read a detailed explanation of these base ingredients in my Vanilla Latte Instant Dry Mix post.

  • instant dry milk (nonfat or whole dairy, coconut or soy for vegan version)
  • instant espresso powder
  • vanilla powder (recipe to make your own)
  • salt
  • powdered sugar
  • corn starch

Plus, cocoa of course! In addition to the above ingredients, this mix has chocolate in the form of cocoa powder. Good quality cocoa can be purchased on Amazon or at your grocery store. I personally prefer a dark, Dutch process cocoa powder.

Step 3. Transfer dry mixture to a jar or other airtight container. Pint mason jars work well. I use a jar funnel to make the task easy and tidy.

To make one mocha latte with this mix:

  • HOT MOCHA LATTE-- Add 1/4 cup of mixture to mug and add 8 oz. (1 cup) boiling water. Stir and enjoy!
  • COLD MOCHA LATTE-- Add 1/4 cup mixture to mug and add 1 tablespoon hot tap water; stir until smooth. Gradually stir in 8 oz (1 cup) cold water; add ice cubes, if desired.

Make it a gift!  Fill a mason jar with dry mocha latte mix, label it, and you've got a homemade gift to give. Give the jar of mix alone or nest it inside a latte mug. These make ideal gifts for hosts/hostesses, teachers, co-workers, college students, neighbors and friends.

Download printable jar labels/tags.

  • Print these on card stock, cut them out, punch a hole in the top, and hang them from the jar neck with a ribbon, string, or rubber band. OR
  • Print them on sticker paper and stick them to the jar or lid. Or, print them on regular paper and stick them on with tape. If you don't have a printer or specialty papers, you can have a store with printing services download and print them for you (Kinkos, Office Depot, Staples, etc.)

Cut with scissors or a circle punch. You can cut the round tags out carefully with scissors, or use a circle punch to make the task easier and more precise. The circle punches come in several sizes to accommodate different jar and bottle lids.

  • at home
  • at work
  • in hotel rooms
  • while camping or backpacking
  • in dorm rooms

For a tasty, finishing touch, try topping it off with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon or cocoa. Yum!
