Springtime in St. Louis

Spring officially started 6 days ago. Here is a photo of my house as I returned home from some shopping yesterday. It was snowing so hard, I had to take this photo out of my car window so my phone/camera wouldn't get soaked. This came on so suddenly. When I left to go shopping, everything was green. Those trees are covered in buds--ready to blossom. What is up with all this snow?

Springtime in Pleasanton

A week ago I was in California. I spent a couple of days with T-Man in San Francisco, followed by a couple of days with my sister, Nelda, in Pleasanton. Springtime in northern California is looking way better than St. Louis.

Here's something that would never happen in St. Louis . . . Nelda picked a bowl of Meyer lemons from the tree in her backyard. I'm picking a few limes. Notice I'm still in my red house slippers. We were having a lazy sister day together. The surprising thing is that we're not still in our pajamas.

Although, we did stay in our jammies for a good long bit. I was so very grateful to my brother-in-law, Jim, for snapping this photo of us in one of our more glamourous moments (see below). He took it with his phone camera, so thankfully the quality is poor and dark. I assure you, I wouldn't be sharing it otherwise. Wouldn't want to scare anyone. I didn't get Nelda's permission to post this photo of "Babes in Robes" for the whole world to see. I hope she's still speaking to me.

In the photo, we are reading an email from King-Man while sipping hot espresso from one of those fancy machines that grinds the beans and disperses a delicious cup of espresso at the touch of button. Nelda's my big sister, so she gets to have expensive, cool gadgets like that. I want one when I grow up.

I'm back home in St. Louis now. I can stand in my kitchen and see a bowl of Meyer lemons (brought back from Nelda's trees) on my counter, while viewing a snow covered weeping cherry tree out the window. I'm weeping, too. One foot in sunshine and one foot in snow. I'm ready to go back to California.

Coming soon to The Yummy Life:

  • 30-Minute Turkey Chili and Cheesy Corncake Toppers - because it's still winter in St. Louis (even though the calendar says spring), and that's what I'm eating.
  • Pomegranate Margaritas - Nelda made these when we were having our lazy sister day. Along with pomegranate juice, she used lime and Meyer lemon juice (fresh from her trees). So delicious, and the recipe is super easy.

Here are some recipes and ideas from other bloggers that caught my eye . . .

How to Make Dried Pineapple Flowers from Annie Eats. OMG. These look like giant yellow poppies. I thought they were real flowers when I first saw them. They are so easy to make, and perfect for decorating spring and summer desserts. So cool. So clever.

Chicken Fried Steak from The Pioneer Woman. This looks just like what my own pioneer grandma used to make. I may have to make this for T-Man next time he's home.

Cinnamon Roll Pancakes from Recipe Girl.  These look amazing. A must-try.

Baby Shower Mints from Confessions of a Cookbook Queen. It never occured to me that you could make these. Love how you can customize them for any occasion by using different shapes--just like cut-out cookes.
