Pinterest Beginner Tips

Have you joined the Pinterest craze yet? It's all the buzz in social networking. I have been using it since last fall (thanks to an invite from my friend, Sheri at The Loopy Ewe), and I'm totally addicted. I've gone from not quite getting what all the fuss was about in the beginning, to now not knowing when to stop pinning and repinning. Apparently, I'm not alone. Pinterest is growing at lightening speed; in 2011, it grew from 418,000 users in May to 7.5 million in December. (source) Its addictive nature is hard to understand until you join and start pinning. (read more)

What is Pinterest?
Their tagline: "A place to organize and share things you love"

  • It's a visual bulletin board for your personal use. How many times do you google something or find a website you want to remember, or find a great idea or product online, and you want to put that info. somewhere so you can easily find it again? Pinterest is a place to store links to all of these. You set up visual boards, create categories that are of interest to you, and pin an image on your board that links to the source.
  • It's a vast shared bulletin board for public use. It's a place to share and obtain new ideas from the growing community of other Pinterest users. All pins and boards are public. You and your friends can follow each other's boards, and you can search the entire Pinterest network for others who have pinned topics of interest to you. Eventually, you'll be following more strangers than friends as you find each other through your mutual tastes and interests. That's part of the fun.

Pinterest is both entertaining and useful. It gives me a place to store images and links to every yummy little thing I come across on the internet. Plus, it opens a huge, new world of ideas and links via other participants in the Pinterest network. It's become a great source of information and inspiration. It can do that for you, too. No matter your interests, hobbies, or events you may be planning, Pinterest can help you organize, share, and grab lots of great ideas.

Maybe you've already joined and haven't really gotten in the Pinterest groove yet. Maybe you haven't joined and want to learn more. Either way, this post is for you. I'm going to run through what I've learned as an avid Pinterest user. I'm no expert; these are all trial-and-error tips I've figured out along the way.

So, here we go...

How to Join Pinterest. Technically, you have to be invited to join Pinterest. But, I've never heard of anyone being declined an invitation request. It's just a matter of how long it takes. Options:

  1. Ask a friend who already uses Pinterest to invite you. That's the quickest way.
  2. Go to Pinterest.com and request an invitation directly from them. You may get put on a waiting list. I've heard of it taking anywhere between 2 days and 2 weeks.
  3. Request an invite on the Pinterest Facebook page for a faster response.
  4. Request an invite from me. Just let me know you'd like an invitation in the comments section at the end of this post. I check comments several times a day, and will send you an invitation as soon as I read your request.

  • PINA pin is an image added to Pinterest. A pin can be added from a website using the Pin It button, or you can upload personal images from your computer. Each pin added using the Pin It button links back to the site it came from. (Seinfeld would surely have had an episode about whether or not something is "pin-worthy".)
  • BOARDA board is a collection of pins categorized however you choose. A board can be created on any topic, such as Recipes, Wedding Ideas, Books to Read, Health & Fitness, or Wishlist. You can add as many pins to a board as you want and create as many boards as you want.
  • FOLLOWING“Following All” means you'll have all of a user’s new pins on all their boards shown to you in real-time on your Pinterest Home Page. If the user makes new boards, you will automatically follow them. You can follow individual boards (intead of all of them) if you're only interested in seeing a user's pins to specific boards. You can unfollow boards and users at any time--they will not be notified (no hurt feelings).

Getting started. Pinterest can be a bit overwhelming at first. Just dive in. You will soon discover how intuitive it is to create boards, add pins, and browse the unlimited pins elsewhere on Pinterest.

1.  I really, really, REALLY encourage you to install a "Pin It" button on the tool bar of your browser. Once it's there, it is unbelievably easy to pin images from any website: products you might want to buy, decorating ideas for your home, recipes, etc.

Pin button, no arrow.jpg
Click here to get the PIN IT button & view a "how to" video.

2.  Browse around other Pinterest boards to get a feel for this. If you have friends who are on Pinterest already, look at their boards and get ideas for categories that will work for you. You can check out my boards here

3.  Set up your personal Profile & Boards page. (see a sample below)

4.  Start pinning. (WARNING: You have entered a time suck...once you start, you may not be able to stop!)

Universal Top Bar Features
These appear at the top of every Pinterest Page so you can easily navigate around the site from anywhere.

How to Create Pins from Websites
When you find something on a website that you'd like to pin to a Pinterest board, follow these easy steps.

(Click on image below for larger pdf view or to print it.)

How to Pin .jpg

How to Create Pins Using Personal Photos
Maybe you've got your own ideas to share on your Pinterest board. Take photos of how you've organized, decorated, or created something in your home, or share scenic photos from a favorite places. Transfer the photos to your computer and upload them to your Pinterest boards. Here's how:

  • click ADD on the top bar of any Pinterest page
  • click UPLOAD A PIN
  • click CHOOSE A FILE
  • select an image file from your computer
  • choose a board and title for the image
  • click PIN IT

Keep in mind that Pinterest is a place to display images, not paragraphs of content. So only upload photos that are self-explanatory (along with your brief title/description) or link to a website with a full explanation, recipe, instructions, etc.

Navigating Your Profile Page
Here's an image of my profile page and boards with the different features identified. To get to your profile page from anywhere on Pinterest, simply click on your name in the upper right corner, then click around and explore the options.

(Click on the image for larger pdf view or to print it)

Pinterest Profile Page.jpg

It's easy to add & delete boards, edit their titles, and add and delete pins. So, don't sweat having every board perfectly defined and titled from the start. Just get going. You can go back and do some house cleaning later. I've reorganized my boards several times already.

Navigating Your Own Boards
From your Profile Page, click on any of your boards to view everything you have pinned on that board. Here's an example of my board of Organization tips.

(Click on the image for larger pdf view or to print it)

A Closer Look at A Pin
Click on an individual pin from any board or your Home page, and here is what you'll see.

(Click on the image for larger pdf view or to print it)

Pin Closer Look.jpg

There are only minor differences between viewing images pinned by you or someone else.

Pin by me others.jpg

Navigating your Home Page.
Click on the Pinterest logo in the top bar to get to your Home Page. This page is similar to your news feed in Facebook. Your Home Page shows the most current pins by you and those you follow. Every time there's a new pin by you or them, it shows up here. If you want to make sure you haven't missed any new pins by others, scroll down this page until you hit the last pins you saw in your previous visit. Repin anything you like along the way. You can also browse the entire Pinterest network from here.

(Click on the image for larger pdf view or to print it)

Home page.jpg

Browsing and Following Other Boards.
You may choose to FOLLOW ALL of another person's boards, or you may pick and choose only some of their boards to FOLLOW or UNFOLLOW. Any time pins are added to boards you've chosen to follow, they will show up on your Home Page. You may return to their boards and change these follow/unfollow settings at any time.

(Click on image below for larger pdf view or to print it.)

Other boards.jpg

Repinning from anywhere.
Whether you're viewing new pins from those you follow or pins from browsing the Pinterest network, it's easy to repin images to your own boards. Simply hover your mouse over the pin's image and choose to REPIN, LIKE or leave a COMMENT. If you REPIN something, you will be prompted to assign it to one of your boards. If you LIKE something, it doesn't show up on your boards; however you can view everything you've liked from your Profile Page.

A friend from work was showing me around Pinterest one day-I can see how utterly addicting it can be. I'm trying hard to resist. I'm afraid! But gosh, SO many really neat ideas on there.

Hi Janna. It is definitely a slippery slope. :-)

Monica, thank you for posting this! I'm new to Pinterest and learning as I go along. I find it fun and very addictive! I didn't understand the installing a pin button on my favorites bar part. Thank you for explaining it. I actually found you by following a Pinterest link for your last post. I'm a new follower, your recipes look yummy!

Hi Marcia. I'm so glad we've found each other via Pinterest. That's part of the fun...finding people with mutual interests via our pins. You will love having the PIN IT button on your favorites bar. It is so fun and easy to pin anything from anywhere, and I love being able to select the photo I want to pin. Thanks so much for your comment, and welcome to The Yummy Life! :-)

Great post! It's so much more fun to use Pinterest when you are comfortable with all of the ins and outs.

When I feel like trying out a new recipe, I just head to my Pinterest board now. Not sure if I'll ever use cookbooks again! And when I see a great recipe - like here at The Yummy Life - I pin it so that I know I won't forget about it later. It's a win/win all around.

Reply
Monica 4 months ago
Ditto all that, Sheri! I'm using Pinterest as my virtual cookbook, too. It's so convenient to have one place to compile everything. Love the visual aspect...perusing all of the delicious photos is part of the fun.

Your tutorial was very helpful.  I joined but had no idea what I was doing, or how the site would be helpful to me.  While I understand how it works much better it now, I don't think it will be of great use to me.  But it seems to be lots of fun for lots of folks. Thanks much.

Hi Savanna Gal. If Pinterest doesn't turn out to be your thing, one upside is that you won't enter the time suck that I get lost in all too often. :-) Thanks for the comment.

Nice!!
A question:  When you are logged out of Pinterest, but go to www.pinterest.com, you see alot of cute ideas that are not from your 'followers'.  What is the easiest way to pin those?
I have found that I must just go to the source, pull it up in a new tab, then log on, go to that webpage and pin.  I sometimes feel 'bad' because it not 'linking' back to the person who originally pinned it.

Reply
Monica 4 months ago
Hi Karen. I just tried to test this; so, I logged out and went to Pinterest.com. The page that first appeared with a variety ideas is the same one that I get when I click on "popular" on the top bar of my Home Page. For me, it worked to mouse over any of those images; a "repin" option appeared near the top left of the image, I clicked on that, and it prompted me to assign it to a board and click "pin it"; then it shows up on the board I've assigned it to and and includes the original pinner and website link. Hope that makes sense. :-) Let me know if I didn't address your question satisfactorily.

Pinterest is new enough that it can be kind of buggy and slow sometimes, so the pinning process doesn't always work smoothly. That can be frustrating. Most of the time, it works great.

new to the addiction and having a problem downloading a profile picture instead of the 'perky shadow chick'...I'm following the Pintrest very vague directions but I'm not coming up w/ the option they indicate.  It's probably me..please help - stranger in a strange land

Reply
Monica 4 months ago
Hi Patti. First, Pinterest can be pretty buggy sometimes--it's not unusual for things not to work properly. Sometimes I can't do what I'm trying to do and have to return later. So, that's one possibility. Here's how loading a photo works for me: when I click on "UPLOAD IMAGE" in my profile edit settings, I then click on "CHOOSE FILE", next I select a file from my computer and click "OPEN". That loads my photo into my Pinterest profile. If that doesn't work for you, I recommend trying again later. I know it can be frustrating....

I'm new to Pinterest and on my iphone app it has real time pins from the people I'm following. On Pinterest.com on the left side of my page it shows only things I have done and I'm following 24 people. Where are their real time pins? I hope you can help.

Reply
Monica 4 months ago
Hi Julieann. Your Profile Page with your personal boards only shows your own real time pins. Your Home Page (get there by clicking on the PINTEREST logo on the center top bar) shows the real time pins of you plus everyone you're following. (See "Navigating your Home Page" in the post above for more detail.) Hope that helps.

I'm wondering, does anyone use the "like" button?

Reply
Monica 4 months ago
Hi Jenn--Here are suggestions for the LIKE button:
1. LIKE pins that are high priority and you want to access right away (so they don't get lost on other boards).
2. Kind of the opposite of #1, LIKE things that aren't important enough to add to a board; but it's a way to communicate to the original pinner that you saw and liked it--more of a conversational thing.
3. Use your likes for making a gift wish list for yourself or others.

What does "Everything" represent?  I think of it as the main board.  How does one get her/his pins on the "Everything" board?

Reply
Hi Cindy. EVERYTHING is a mixture of categories of pins that is totally controlled by Pinterest. They have some kind of algorythm that posts random pins there. As far as I know, there isn't anything we can do to get our pins posted there.

We spent a week walking and biking that beautiful city. Such lovely, friendly people. I'm anxious to go back some day and see more of Denmark. :-)

Hi! I have a question about editing a board. When I first started I only had a few boards I was pinning everything onto. Now that I have been doing it for a bit I need to divide those boards up. Do you know of a easier way besides doing them one at a time? That takes way to long and I have not been able to find a different way. Thanks so much!

Reply
Monica 3 months ago
Hi Kendra. Good question. I've had to divide my boards, too, and will likely do it again as the # of pins on them grows. Unfortunately, the only way to do that is to reassign the pins to new boards one at a time. First create the new board, then click "edit" on each board you want to move, and reassign it to the new board. It takes awhile; but that's the only way I know of.

Reply
Monica 3 months ago
Correction. The next to the last sentence should read: "First create the new board; then click "edit" on each PIN you want to move, and reassign it to the new board."

I found you via Pimterest. I love the way your blog is organized - especially your handy Pin it button! Many sites have this, but not all of them put the name of the pin for you. How did you get it to do that? Have you ever considered writing a post about blogging? I would be interested in reading it!

Reply
Tyler 5 weeks ago
Hi Jennifer, I'm the programmer for The Yummy Life. You can see how the "Pin it" button works on this page: http://pinterest.com/about/goodies/

If you scroll down to the "Pin It Button for Web Sites" section, you'll see where you can create a Pinterest button. Just enter the URL and description you want, and they'll give you the code. Copy that code into the html of your blog post, and it should work.

Warning: this next part gets sort of technical, so feel free to ignore it.

If you want to have the "pin it" button included in each post automatically instead of manually copying the code each time, you'll need to have access to the code on your server (so it probably won't work if you're not hosting the blog yourself). Just add the code Pinterest gives you to each blog post, but replace the URL parameters in the "href" attribute to use the correct URL and description. Here's an example of what that code should look like:

href="http://pinterest.com/pin/create/button/?url=URL_OF_YOUR_SITE&media=URL_OF_THE_MAIN_IMAGE&description=BLOG_POST_TITLE"

I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

Great article - really helpful.  Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get an invite so far - any chance you could invite me?

Hi - thanks for all the great info.  Can you invite me to pinterest?  For some reason the "request an invitation" on the pinterest site didn't generate anything for me.

Thanks again!
Ellen

THIS IS A QUESTION.. FOR SOME REASON I CAN NOT ADD FOLLOWS ANYMORE. I'LL HIT FOLLOW ALL AND LEAVE THE PERSONS SITE, WHEN I GO BACK I'M NOT FOLLOWING. WHETHER I FOLLOW ONE OR ALL NOTHING HAPPENS. I SENT THE PROBLEM TO PINTEREST NO HELP. MAYBE YOU HAVE AND ANSWER THANK YOU

Hi. Wish I had a solution, but I'm afraid the folks at Pinterest are the only ones who can help you. You might try leaving a message on the Pinterest Facebook page. Sometimes you'll get a faster response that way; or there may be someone else who has had that problem and can offer a solution.

I have been on pintrest for a little while, but all of a sudden it won't let me pin any longer. I hit the repin it try to pin but it seems to bounce back. I can edit comment but not repin it. Do you know anything that will help.

Hi Pat. That sounds very frustrating! It sounds like something buggy going on with Pinterest--not uncommon. If the problem continues, you may have to contact them directly. You also might try posting the problem on the Pinterest Facebook page. Sometimes you'll get a faster response that way, or someone else may see your comment who has had the same problem and knows how to resolve it. Sorry I can't help.
